In the 1960's the Beatles raised the bar for pop music. Bands that had a writer who could create some melodic songs got signed by a big label. Melody was the new style. That's why there was a proliferation of melodic songs in the 60's. The Beatles broke up - their melodic output ceased - as a result pop melodies gave way to something else....of course inferior, because melody is the essence of music.

We live in an age of machines. Hard rock music resembles the energy and rhythm and power of machinery. The roar and rumble of trains was energetic noise to me. It made me feel powerful........just like energetic rock music and headbanger stuff makes some people feel powerful. I don't think rock music would have made sense to people before the industrial revolution.
